Nelson Township Authority, Tioga Count
COMPLETED: 2005
This project included the renovation of the existing wastewater treatment plant and the extension of the wastewater collection system. The extension was needed to serve 38 homes with contaminated wells and failing septic systems on the west side of Nelson Township. The existing 56,000-gpd treatment plant, which utilized Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC’s) for secondary treatment was worn out, and every treatment process required major repairs.
The new 50,000-gpd WWTP removes phosphorus biologically using the Virginia Initiative Plant (VIP) process to protect the Cowanesque Reservoir. The biological reactor for the VIP process and the aerobic digester are cast-in-place concrete. Other new treatment processes include a submersible influent pump station and a reed bed sludge dewatering system.Existing clarifiers were renovated. New treatment buildings were set over the pump and chemical room and RBC chamber
The small-diameter, variable-grade, septic tank effluent collection system includes:
- two duplex submersible pump stations,
- 11,000 feet of 2-, 3-, and 4-inch gravity collectors,
- 25 septic tanks, and
- 7,300 feet of 1 ½- and 3-inch force mains.
