Wharton Township, Potter County
COMPLETED: 2021
Bassett Engineering surveyed, designed, obtained permits and grand funding, and provided construction phase engineering including inspection on Cemetery Road in Wharton Township, Potter County. Replaced a 36-foot span by 16-foot long steel beam bridge with a 42-ft span by 24-foot long by 10 ft-high precast concrete arch with cast-in-place footings on Cemetery Road over East Fork Sinnemahoning Creek. The contractor purchased the precast arch from an approved supplier and installed the same. The arch itself, headwalls, wing walls, and wing wall footers were precast concrete. Arch manufacturer supplied precast ’Express’ concrete forms for the arch foundations, within which Contractor casted concrete in place. Installed E&S measures, divert stream flows, protect existing utilities. Demolished and removed the existing bridge, returned selected components to Township, properly disposing of the remainder. Excavated for foundations, arch, and wing walls, including bedrock. Set foundations into the bedrock and backfilled with grout. Placed and compacted stone backfill behind arch and wing walls. Stabilized the 4 bridge corners at the wing walls with riprap.
Reconstructed the gravel roadway. Set guide rail and traffic control signage/delineators. Controlled traffic, perform all necessary incidental work, provided all required appurtenances, and restored the site to its original condition. A PennDOT Multimodal Transportation Fund grant which was awarded in March of 2021 helped offset construction costs.
