Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program Bundle 1

January 19, 2022 By Joey Worth

Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program Bundle 1
COMPLETED: 2021

Bassett Engineering is pleased to announce the completion of Bundle 1 of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program. The bridge bundling program is meant to upgrade local bridges at significantly lower costs than if each bridge was repaired or replaced individually. Cost savings result from the considerable economy of scale gained by building multiple bridges of the same type under one contract. Bassett Engineering conducted a feasibility study considering a wide variety of bridge types to determine the optimum structure for each location. This program also involved a steering committee of the seventeen municipalities, PennDOT, PADEP, PA Fish & Boat, and the Lycoming County Conservation District.

The project is split into four bundles: each bundle consists of 3 to 5 bridges of the same structure type. The Feasibility Study began in July 2020. Bundle 1 was designed in 2020 and early 2021 and constructed in 2021. Bundles 2 and 3 are being designed in 2021 and will be constructed in 2022. Bundle 4 will be designed in 2022 and constructed in 2023.

Bundle 1: Aluminum Box Culverts

Aluminum Box Culverts (ALBC’s) offer the greatest hydraulic opening at the lowest cost for any full highway traffic-rated structure for spans up to 20 – 25 feet.

  • Eldred Township, Calebs Creek Road
  • Hepburn Township, Klump Road
  • Limestone Township, Mill Road

Completed Project: Cemetery Road Bridge

December 15, 2021 By Joey Worth

Bassett Engineering surveyed, designed, obtained permits, and provided construction phase engineering including inspection during installation of the Cemetery Road bridge replacement. The bridge is located on Cemetery Road over East Fork Sinnemahoning Creek in Wharton Township, Potter County. The brand new bridge is a 42-ft span by 24-foot long by 10 ft-high precast concrete arch with cast-in-place footings. The contractor for this project was Charles J. Merlo Inc. out of Mineral Point, PA, they purchased the precast arch from an approved supplier and installed the same. A PennDOT Multimodal Transportation Fund grant which was awarded in March of 2021 helped offset construction costs. The arch itself, headwalls, wing walls, and wing wall footers were precast concrete along with precast ‘Express’ concrete forms for the arch foundations, within which the Contractor cast concrete in place. All precast superstructure pieces were delivered and erected in one work day. Fantastic work to all who were involved with the project, excited for people in Wharton Township to enjoy the new bridge!
