Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program: Bundle 3

Winner Lane, Gamble Township

Bassett Engineering is pleased to announce the completion of Winner Lane Bridge! The bridge is a part of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program, Bundle 3.

This bridge sits at the lower end of a marshy field over Murray Run, an Exceptional Value natural reproduction trout stream. The low stream velocities enabled the use of a Geosynthetic Reinforced Soils Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS), which is well-suited for the low-profile structure on a low-ADT road. GRS also offered the ability to orient with Winner Lane’s skew to Murray Run. The abutment was shaped to fit the superelevation of the road surface that suits the curve of the road at the bridge while meeting the bridge alignment.

The installation for this project was handled by Rylind Construction, and Winner Lane was opened to traffic in October of 2022!

Lycoming County Bridge Bundling: Bundle 2

Bill Sones Road, Moreland Township

Bassett Engineering is excited to announce the completion of the fifth and final bridge under Bundle 2 of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program!

The brand-new concrete arch spans 32′ and is 33′ long and is located on Bill Sones Road in Moreland Township. A precast arch was chosen for Bill Sones Road due to stream and site requirements.

The stream crossing has been improved by increasing the hydraulic opening and capacity, providing armor against erosion along upstream and downstream embankments, and reducing scour at the outlet by lowering stream velocities through the structure. The structure was sized to carry a full two-lane roadway.

The structure was designed by Bassett Engineering of Montoursville, prepurchased by Lycoming County through the PA COSTARS Program, and the installation was completed by Wolyniec Construction of Williamsport, PA. The bridge was completed in October of 2022.

Completed Project: McCarty Ridge Road

September 16, 2022 By Joey Worth

Elkland Township, McCarty Ridge Road

Bassett Engineering is excited to announce the completion of the new bridge on McCarty Ridge Road in Elkland Township. The new bridge replaced a 12-foot span, steel beam bridge with a 24-ft span, precast concrete arch over an unnamed tributary to Elk Creek. The new bridge was assembled from 4 precast arch segments and is set at an 81-degree skew to the McCarty Ridge Road passing overtop. The bridge also includes 4 precast wing walls specially designed to promote smooth hydraulic behavior of the curving mountain stream passing through the structure. Elkland Township purchased the precast arch from an approved supplier and Performance Construction installed the same along with completing approximately 350 LF of roadway regrading through the area. The arch itself, headwalls, wing walls, and wing wall footers were precast concrete. The arch manufacturer also supplied precast ’Express’ concrete forms for the foundations, within which the contractor completed the cast-in-place foundation on site. The foundations for the arches and wing walls were set into the bedrock stream bottom and locked in place with flowable fill. The bridge is capped with precast headwalls which are mounted with a PennDOT-approved Guide Rail system including all traffic control signage/delineators. The work also included installing E&S measures, diverting stream flows, protecting existing utilities, demolishing and removing the existing bridge, returning selected components to Township, and properly disposing of the remainder. The project included a detailed Traffic Controlled Plan, and other incidental site grading, drainage design, and other pertinent work to restore the site to its original condition. Bassett Engineering designed, bid, and provided construction inspection services while Performance  Construction of Postville, Pa completed the construction of the new bridge.

Groundbreaking Ceremony: Bundle 3

September 1, 2022 By Joey Worth

Bassett Engineering was honored to participate in the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program: Bundle 3. The program in total involves the repair and replacement of seventeen locally owned bridges across Lycoming County. The Lycoming County Commissioners and County Transportation Planning and Development staff, Bassett Engineering, and the local municipal bridge owners gathered in Montgomery to kick off the construction of Bundle 3. To view the informational booklet for the Groundbreaking event please click HERE.

Bundle 3 of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program consists of five (5) all-new Geosynthetic Reinforced Soils Integrated Bridge Systems (GRS-IBS). After conducting an extensive feasibility study, Bassett Engineering determined GRS-IBS to be the best structure type for these sites. Bundle 3 bridges consist entirely of geosynthetic reinforced soil foundations and abutments, combined with precast concrete beams and cast-in-place concrete decks. GRS abutments are suitable where stream velocities do not exceed 12 feet per second. These conditions are fairly common on tributaries in the floodplain of larger streams, mountain plateaus, and downstream wetlands, lakes, and ponds.

Total construction cost for Bundle totals $2,015,000.00. Rylind Construction Company, Inc is constructing the Bundle.

New GRS-IBS bridges will be installed at the following locations:

  • Montgomery Park Road, Montgomery Borough
  • Zinck Road, Mifflin Township
  • Winner Lane, Gamble Township
  • Penn Drive, Wolf Township
  • Logue Hill, Penn Township

Completed Project: Sheridan Street

August 31, 2022 By Joey Worth

Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program: Bundle 2

Sheridan Street, Loyalsock Township

Bassett Engineering is excited to announce the completion of the second bridge under Bundle 2 of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program! The new precast concrete box bridge is located on Sheridan Street in Loyalsock Township. The bridge has a span of 12 feet and a length of 60 linear feet. The new structure is made of 9 precast concrete box pieces and 1 precast concrete end section. The new bridge crosses Sheridan Street and matches up to an existing precast concrete box structure of the same dimensions. This structure exists to provide stormwater conveyance southward and across River Ave to an open channel which eventually discharges to the Susquehanna River. The concrete box is a great fit for this urban low-rise site with a high traffic count. The precast boxes also minimize the construction footprint on-site to protect adjacent properties and utilities and facilitated a speedy connection to the existing structure. Bassett Engineering designed, bid, and provided construction inspection services while Wolyniec Construction of Williamsport, Pa completed the construction of the new bridge. This is the second of five precast concrete bridges that will be constructed under Bundle 2.

Lycoming County Bridge Bundle: Bundle 3

Logue Hill, Penn Township

Bassett Engineering is excited to announce the completion of the first bridge under Bundle 3 of the Lycoming County Bridge Bundling Program! The new GRS-IBS bridge on Logue Hill in Penn Township spans 25′-0” and has a clear width of 22’. The bridge utilizes Geosynthetic Reinforced Soils (GRS) abutments,  saving cost over traditional structure types. The structure selection allowed for shorter construction time and minimized road closure for the local residents. Bassett Engineering designed, bid, and provided construction inspection, while the construction was completed by Rylind Construction Company. Four more GRS-IBS bridges will be constructed under Bundle 3 this year.
